Troves is now on its second edition!

Welcome to Trove 2e, a lighthearted solo and cooperative roleplaying game of exploring, discovering, and recovering lost treasures from across a fantasy inspired world. In Troves you will:

•    Explore thematic Delves using adventure modules

•    Fight monsters, cast spells, use abilities, and recovery shiny treasure

•    Develop your character’s abilities through each successful, or tragic, delve

•    Create your own original story with each game session

Troves is a beginner friendly introduction to the world of GM-less RPGs and tabletop gaming blending dice rolling, imagination, and shared emergent storytelling.

Whats New?

Troves 2e has been rewritten from scratch, providing a clearer flow of rules, mechanics, and gameplay. Players will notice some major changes, especially the removal of Dice Value modifiers, e.g. d4 to d6, d6 to d8, and so on. Instead, players now use modifiers and opposing roles to perform Checks and Saves. This creates a simpler and faster game for all.

As well, each of the Delvers now has improved Abilities and starting Stats and Attributes, providing more options for starting out. Players can further upgrade their character with a revamped Downtime phase, offering more training, equipment, and meaningful choices outside of adventuring.

How Does it Play

Players choose or create their own Delve to Adventure in. While there, the search for Clues to reach the Finale, encountering enemies, trials, and loot for the taking. Once at the Finale, the party must overcome it, gaining even more rewards. Afterwards, the party goes into Downtime, where they can sell their loot, buy new equipment, and train for future adventures.

This core loop of Adventure, Finale, and Downtime creates a fast-paced system for new and returning players. There is never a dull moment in Troves!

Troves can be played solo, or cooperatively with up to 3 people so grab a few friends and get exploring!

Delves

Hidden deep within the shadowed valleys of an ancient forest lies the rumored Lair of the Wyrm, a place whispered about by brave adventurers and broken Delvers. Enshrouded in a mystery of overgrown foliage, this abandoned maze serves as the domain of the fearsome Wyrm.

Inside the rulebook you will find 3 revised Delves to get started with. These provide a great jumping-off point for first time players and spark the imagination for custom adventures.

As well, you will find instruction on how to make your own Delve!  Add your own art, flair, and uniqueness to the project, as well as put it up for sale (or free)!

Big congrats for the 2nd edition release, Sasquatch Games team!

Thank you, zerodan. Hope you enjoy.

Hi there,

I started my first playthrough of Troves and like it quite alot but I have a questions about the rulings.

I have problem with the core concepts "DV +" vs "+ attributes", probably because english is not my first language.

Am I correct with my assumption that the spelling of the whole book is:

Agility +1 means the DV is +1 and +1 Agility means add 1 to your agility roll? Or does it have to clearly state "DV" to modify the dice.

Because I only found specified DVs in the Training section and in the Items of the Wyrm Maze, all other Tables just show +/- Value before or after the attribute.

But then again the Wyrm weapon "Blade of the Wyrm" states Fight DV+1 and Fight + 1 ... which would be DV+2, in the Crump Tables we have the Crumps Hammer which does Fight + 3 and then -1 Agility, which would "raise" the DV + 3 and -1 to a Agility roll.

My second question is about the Iron Knuckles from The Guardian which says "deal 1 harm on a failed attacks", does this activate on my failed attacks, on enemy failed attacks or both?

(+1)

I can understand Dice Value (DV) being confusing. Agility +1 and +1 Agility are interchangeable i.e. they mean the same thing. A DV modification would be clearly stated, such as Agility DV+1.

So, the Blade of the Wyrm (Fight DV+1, Fight +1, Harm 4) would modify the Fight DV by +1 and a +1 bonus to Fight rolls.

Crump's Hammer (Fight +3, -1 Agility, 3 Harm) would give +3 to all Fight rolls, -1 to Agility rolls, and deals 3 Harm. There are no modification to DV.

Iron Knuckles (Deal 1 Harm on failed attacks) deals a guaranteed 1 Harm to the target when your character misses.

I'm actually working on an update for TROVES, making it simpler for players, and addressing issues like DV and modifiers. I'm aiming to have the new version out by the end of this week.

Thank you very much for clarifying.

I am really interested in the coming changes.

Hi there! Yesterday I tried the game with a friend, and it works smooothly as I was expecting! Great job! Just a couple of points to discuss, and I will be happy if you could answer :D
- we wanted to create a custom character but we couldn't get how the "choosing abilities" section works: let's say a character has 21 dice value points total. The tier should be the one with 4 Stamina points (pg.13). Once we got there, we were just lost ahahah. What does this tier refers to? The total of spendable stamina for the Starting Abilities (+1 a free one?). And then, what about the Unlockable? If there are 4 additional points to spend for unlockable abilities, we are talking about a total of 8 stamina that can be spent on Starting and Unlockable? We tried and compare these thoughts with the pregens, but we couldn't find a consistent pattern. so PLEASE help :D
- in the delves there are 2 different table for Items and Weapons/Armour. When the Reward tables refers to "equipment", should we roll a d12 on these tables and get a random iteems/weapon/armor from here? Is that what you intended with Equipment? We got confused by the words Equipment but then there's no a proper Equipment table except for the one at pag.17

It would be great to hear from you, because we usually like to play games as intended by the author! Again, great work! It was fun until the Wyrm wiped us away...actually, also that was part of the fun.

Cheers,
Lorenzo

Happy to hear you are enjoying the game.

1. The 4 Stamina is your starting Stamina for the custom character.  When choosing Starting Abilities, look at the Stamina cost to use each. Then, you pick up to your total starting Stamina worth of abilities for your custom character. So, a "tier 4" character would have 4 Stamina point to "use" for picking Starting Abilities from the existing characters. In most cases, you will get 4 Abilities as most only cost 1 Stamina from the Starting Abilities cost 1 Stamina to use.

2. An Unlockable refers to Abilities that you only unlock with the main characters during gameplay. You can see them on the bottom of each character under "Unlockable Abilities." With a "tier 4" character you pick abilities from these lists up to the 4 Stamina cost total. Choose what you want, calculate the total Stamina to use them, and then adjust (same as above). You unlock these the same way as the base characters, i.e. you need to do Training and spend coins.

3. When you are rewarded "Equipment" pick either table to roll on. It is split this way to make it easier to get things you want as some Delves require items from specific lists.

Let me know if you have any additional questions.

(+1)

Ok, got it! Thank you very much for your reply, and keep up the great work. I'll let you know if something else comes out during the next session. Cheers!

hi there fabulous creator. Just curious if there’s any more community copies available? I really appreciate game creators like you who do generously offer these community copies to people going through a hard time. It really helps out.

Thank you in advance

There are some up now ☺️

(+1)

thank you very much

Appreciate it

I had added some a month ago when you originally asked, just forgot to respond; sorry!

no worries

(+2)

I was curious where you got Troves printed? Paper weights as well. I recently printed a few copies of my game Glaive for use at the table and had them bound in a similar fashion. The results were fine, but not exactly what I’d hoped for. My covers are more like your interior pages (100 weight?) and the interior pages are too flimsy for my tastes.

Hoping for better results the next time I do something like this.

Love the game by the way! :D

(+3)

I used Mixam for the 200 copy print run. My specs were 100lb uncoated, cover was 130lb satin with a matte anti-scuff. I wanted an even thicker interior, but 100 weight was the max at the time.

Thanks for the info! It’s such a gorgeous book.

You're welcome. I hope to see a beautiful book from you soon!

For the Backgrounds, are their starting Stamina including the equipment? Such as the Ranger starts with 8 stamina but also has a +1 Sturdy boots. Does that mean they have 9 stamina?

Starting stats are not including the gear, so the latter assumption is true. A Ranger starts with 8 Stamina but gains +1 from the boots, making their total 9.

(+1)

I'm finally getting a chance to sit down and play. I'm really enjoying the system! I'm going kind of light on the details as I figure out the rules. Still, I've stumbled into a serpent guardian watching over a burnt nest and discovered some loot beneath a room with ancient, crumbling flooring. One question: for the loot, if I land on "1 equipment," how do I roll that result? I'm assuming I'd discover something from the Items or Gear tables -- do I pick which table? My initial instinct was to roll 1d12, but then I was unclear as to why the tables are separated as 1d6 rolls. Thanks for any help!

I'm happy to see your progress! Rolling is done on the Items or Gear table, depending on what you feel or want to find. Alternatively, as you mentioned, you can roll 1d12 and use the result across the 12 possible Items or Gear.

The d12 was a popular piece of feedback I received during testing, but I stayed with 2 1d6 tables to allow players to pick what they find based on how they are currently feeling about the delve. I really wanted to provide ways to "un-stuck" the story, which an opportune Item or Gear can provide.

(+1)

Nice! That’ll certainly change the way I approach the next delve. Thanks for the reply!

Greetings~ I purchased the game on DTRPG(, cuz I had trouble paying for it on Itch.io.) The latest version on DTRPG is ver.1.6. Could you please update the files on DTRPG as well?

(+1)

Will have that done today. Keep an eye on your email for the notification.

(+2)

Thank you! Haven't started playing the game, but I am loving what I've read right now.

Awesome! If you have any questions please let me know.

(+1)(-1)

Yeah, those typos are in the physical book too, a bit disappointing, because they were highlighted like 5 months ago below. At least correct the digital file pls...

I'll take a look and publish corrections and an FAQ. My apologies on this, no excuses on my part for them still being there.

Please reach out to me via email if you'd like to discuss further.

I've had my eye on this for a while and just picked it up on the 50% off sale. I'm confused about some of the rules. It states that the stats for Fight, Agility, Wits, and Resilience are listed as Dice Totals (the amount of d6), but the character backgrounds show them a d4, d6, d8 etc... Dice Totals only seems mentioned on page 4 and the rest of the rules seem to indicate that those stats aren't dice totals. Also, the rules of +/-X F/M/W/R says its an increase or decrease to Dice Totals, while in the backgrounds and other rules its either a Dice Value increase or a dice modifier (which I guess would be stat dice value plus a number instead of changing the dice rolled). Any clarity on this?

How very embarrassing for myself to have missed that line in editing! It shouldn't be there as that was a relic from the old dice rolling system. Dice Values (DV) are d4 through d12. You will not be rolling only d6 in this game!

You modify both DV and total through a lot of different effects. So, if I have a Fight DV of d6, with a +1 F DV modifier, and +2 F bonus, I would roll a d8 and add 2 to the total rolled when using Fight.

(+1)

That's what I thought! Thanks for the clarification. It's a nice tight little game with great art. Can't wait to play and thank you for the quick reply.

(+1)

Hi, just finished reading of the book, it was a real delight for me. The balance is so well shaped between light rules and some kind of subtle crunchiness, its like a refreshing breeze after a hard and boring day at work. I hope i will get some time to enjoy playing it soon (you know, hardstuck in real life-kids, work, obligations...). In meantime, have few typos and suggestions to report if you dont mind:

1. Typo: pg4 says F/M/W/R, guess should be F/A/W/R.

2. Suggestion: I would add explanation for +X DV in Important concepts, it overlaps with DV+/-X for untrained eye or mind.

3. Typo/Suggestion: pg19 first sentence: Trials are obstacles of strength, agility, or smarts that players are required overcome to proceed. May be:

Trials are obstacles of strength, agility, or smarts that players are required to overcome in order to proceed.

4. Question: pg16 says This treasure has a value of 1d8, meaning a player stands to make between 1 and 8 Coins for trading it using the chart provided below. The table for treasure for die results from 1-8 is 1-5 coins, or i got that wrong?

5. Questions: Are we supposed to name/make up the treasure ourselves, like 1 huge gemstone(1d8), or is there a table for that somewhere?

Sorry for the long version, its the game, it spontaneously derives exploding thoughts in my head :) Keep up the good work, cant wait for KS to begin. Have a great day!!!

Thank you for the feedback.

Questions for page 16 - You are correct. The old version of the system was roll die and use the result for the coins gained. This slipped through my editing!

No table as of this time for treasure. You can make up your own or just record it as the value. In the next version there will be tables for generating unique treasure names.

I did a playthrough stream on my solo TTRPG show. Myself and everyone in the chat was really enchanted by the art and the mechanics. This is probably my fave solo D&D-like thus far (just edging hex crawl).

A quick note, there is no #14 on the "Maze of the Wyrm" location table.

Also, I think the game would benefit from an update where there's more flexibility in the character builder--though I realize that might be difficult to balance.

Otherwise, I hard recommend this lovely game.

(+3)

Thank you for the feedback! I see there is no 14 on the Challenge of Crump delve either, so I must have deleted the row a while back.

I will take the character builder idea into consideration. Perhaps including an option for players to pick from any of the backgrounds for an "advanced start" would be possible. I'm not worried about the balance of characters as Troves is more about having fun and doing cool things.

I am happy to hear that you had fun and if you want to share the link to the stream please do! I will promote it on my socials as well.

(+3)

Ah I didn't want to be tacky and make it about me, but if you would like to share the stream, it's here:

             https://youtube.com/live/RGdB_8ZbyTk

As a side point--in my personal game not on stream--I did find some of the combat was pretty easy for me, so I added the +2 hp buff for a "Hard mode". I'm only mentioning this because you might want to note it as an option in the game docs. It doesn't seem to break anything. Just less likely to be over in a round.

(+3)

Thank you for sharing! Not tacky at all, I love to share people's experiences with my games. I'll be sure to watch the whole thing soon.

The combat is designed to be easy and quick. I will take into consideration the Hard Mode option as other feedback has indicated the same. I've had a few Delves where I was completely stomped by the game and thought it too hard but having the options for players is always good!

Building on the custom character system you mentioned, I have a rough outline of how it works done and will be testing it for a bit before updating the game with the rules. It is pretty straightforward and I hope people can make some broken characters with it, or even just challenge runs. It also opens the door for custom character creation for community content, which is something on my to-do list for Troves.

(+1)

Awesome! Looking forward to it. If I wasn't currently running a PF2e and 5e game, I would absolutely create a trove. I have a couple of ideas for them.

(+2)

Bought it a few days ago. Im somewhat new to TTRPGs and completely new to solo RPGs. I am absolutely in love with this game. I ran a solo version of the included delve and will be playing again with my 8 year old as an introduction to TTRPG/Creative Writing.

(+1)

Glad to hear it! Please let me know how it goes and be sure to check out the other free Delve: The Challenge of Crump

Is there a change log for the changes of 1.1 to 1.2?

(1 edit)

1.2 was correcting a few visual artifacts that showed up on export and grammatical issues.

(+2)

Currently skimming through the book, so I’ve noticed that, at page 4 the last sentence is unfinished:

Luck is restored at the

at the… end of the session? at the end of the Delve?

(+2)

You got it right, at the end of the Delve.

I see on my end that there is an artefact clipping the text on that page. Sorry about that.

I would like to have a go at creating a delve for Trove (and get a free copy).  Can you give me a rough guide to the game so that I can grok the stats needed for tests and monsters etc?

(+1)

Absolutely. I will update the Delve Template files with some more information sometime today.

(+1)

Excellent! I have an idea…

Excited to see the result. You can grab the new bundle which includes some more information added to the document that should make things easier to create and also help scale the experience in a fun way.

Thanks :-)

(+3)

Just bought this, can't wait to play! I was bummed about the Kickstarter, so happy to see it completed.
